STAMP Materials

Free tutorials, handbooks, publications, and tools for learning STPA, CAST, and the STAMP model behind them.

New to STAMP, STPA, and CAST?

Most people start small and go further when they're ready to use the methods on their own work:

  1. Watch a short tutorial
  2. Attend the free MIT STAMP Workshop
  3. Read the handbook
  4. Take a class
  5. Present at the workshop
  6. Get certified

How to get started

Workshop presentations

Nearly all presentations from the annual MIT STAMP Workshop since 2012 are public. Most are by industry practitioners showing what STPA, CAST, or other STAMP-based methods found in their own systems. Search by topic, industry, company, or method to find public examples close to your own work.

Short tutorials

Tutorial videos give a basic familiarity with STAMP, STPA, and CAST. They are meant mainly for practitioners who are new to the methods and want to learn more.

Handbooks

The STPA and CAST handbooks are free to the community and are the definitive guides to understanding and applying both methods.

These handbooks have been downloaded more than 790,000 times.

Online classes and certification

Professional education in these methods is offered separately. The classes are full of hands-on exercises and are designed for new and experienced professionals who want to build their skills in STAMP-based methods.

Books

These books cover the underlying concepts, the theory, worked examples, and the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches to safety.

Tools

MIT does not make software tools for STAMP-based methods, but a number of other groups do. Some are free and others require a license.

Lecture notes from MIT classes

Some materials from MIT classes are public through MIT OpenCourseWare (OCW). Class discussions and activities can't be published, but some lecture slides can be downloaded. The slides went through MIT's standard clearance checks, such as confirming the copyright status of every image, so some material had to be removed.
